British Romance IRL

Role: Editor

Credits: Produced by Benjamin Stephen / Videography by Aaron West / Art Directed & Animated by Koon Nguy

Hollywood’s obsession with classic tales is a tradition that goes back over a century. For the British romance juggernauts of Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice, this means they’ve made their way onto television and movie screens dozens of times. And throughout many of those iterations, one thing remains constant: the British countryside that they’re inextricably tied to.

Produced and hosted by Benjamin Stephen, the best moments of this piece are Ben’s great deliveries of insightful thoughts about British romance novels captured at iconic locations through wind, rain, or shine by the keen eye of the Director of Photography, Aaron West.

With beautiful bespoke illustrations and animations alongside MOGRTs steeped in Vox’s signature flair, the art direction on this piece from Koon Nguy solidified the ties of this piece to the literary source material of the 19th-century elegance, love, and loss found in the British romance genre.

This piece couldn’t have been made without the contributions of Ben, Aaron, Koon, and everyone else at Vox that played a role in this project. But as editor, I had more contributions than just laying files out in a timeline. Pouring through hundreds of clips to get the right broll shot for the scene, digging through public domain source material to find the perfect archival painting or illustration, and even crafting a social media scrolling montage from scratch, I excitedly wore several hats simultaneously throughout the production of this piece to make it as fun as possible.
